July 25, 2026 - 7:00 am - 7:00 pm

Your Commitment:

Creating artwork “en plein air” or outside in nature has been done by artists for hundreds of years as a way to capture the light, air, and movement of the world around them. We want to see how you can use this technique to capture the beauty of Smiths Falls along the historic Rideau Canal waterway! You’ll have one day (7:00 am - 7:00 pm) to create an original work of art depicting a scene from along the Rideau Canal from the Combined Lock Station along Beckwith Street to Smiths Falls Public Library. Please note, you do not have to use the full twelve hours to be eligible to compete, but artwork submissions must be completed on the grounds specified. It is also at each artist’s discretion to prepare for the weather, and locations are chosen on a first come, first serve basis. Artists will be required to bring all of their own supplies to create their artwork during the competition.

All works must be completed and submitted to museum staff by 7:00 pm (EST) on July 25, 2026 to be eligible for judging. Artists will be invited back to the Heritage House Museum (11 Old Slys Road, Smiths Falls, ON K7A 3M3) on Saturday, August 8 at 1:00 pm where the winner will be announced. All submitted artworks will be displayed in the museum until October 4th, 2026.

Artwork will need to be picked up from the Heritage House Museum, October 7th or 8th, 2026 (10:30 am - 4:00 pm). If artwork is not going to be picked up on the requested dates, alternative arrangements must be made with museum staff. After 30 days, if no arrangements have been made, museum staff will rehome the artwork as they see fit.
All works must be allowed to be utilized for promotion of this event and future Rideau Artist of the Year competitions.
